Thomas Seufferlein is Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Ulm, Germany.
He qualified in Medicine from the Technical University of Munich in 1989 and received his clinical training at the Free University of Berlin and Ulm University. From 1993-1996 he worked as a postdoc at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London. From 2008 until 2012 he was head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Pneumology at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. Since 2012 he is head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nephrology at Ulm University.
In addition to his general interest in Gastroenterology he has a particular interest in gastrointestinal oncology and is studying the molecular basis of GI cancers, in particular pancreatic cancer, and piloting the clinical use of novel treatments. Basic research interests include compartment specific signaling in cancer, regulation of cellular protein transport, tumor-host-interaction, organization of the tumor cell cytoskeleton and biomarkers.
As a gastroenterologist, Professor Seufferlein is involved in setting up the German National Guidelines and the ESMO guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. He is Editor in Chief of the German Journal of Gastroenterology and General Secretary of the European Society for Digestive Oncology (ESDO) and serves on the board of the German Cancer Society.
