Pia Österlund is deputy head of department at Tampere university hospital and head of the GI-cancer team at Karolinska University Hospital. She is professor of colorectal cancer at Karolinska Institutet.
After receiving her medical degree from the university of Helsinki in 1993 she took up a position as senior house officer in clinical oncology at St Luke´s hospital in Guildford, Britain. She finished her training in clinical oncology at Helsinki University Central Hospital in 2004. She has four children. She was fixed-term professor at Tampere university. She has worked as consultant with responsibility of the GI outpatients at Helsinki university hospital 2004-2016 and as senior lecturer at University of Helsinki 2008-2014. She is supervising/has supervised 9 PhD theses.
Dr Österlund research field has been GI cancers since 1997 and did her PhD thesis on tolerability of chemotherapy for colorectal cancer. Some novel findings regarding secondary lactose intolerance, lactobacillus supplementation, cytokine release etc, improves everyday life of cancer patients. She is PI in several clinical studies and has done translational research in collaboration with national and international groups.
ESMO and ASCO membership has been a privilege. From 2008 she has served on the ESMO membership and national representative committee, young oncologists committee, the educational committee of colorectal cancer, consensus guidelines committee, scientific board and faculty, ESMO/ASCO global curriculum task force and the nomination committee. She is member of the Nordic GI-cancer group, academic collaboration in colorectal cancer, international rare cancer initiative/ small bowel cancer and the Finnish GI-cancer group.
